I started my locs 9/25/12 using the two strand twist method.
My locs are semi-freeform. Semi- freeforming your locs is different from freeforming.

Freeform locs also referred to as natural locs, involves the natural locking of the hair without any manipulation.
Semi-freeforming is when the locs are partially manipulated by pulling the locs apart or retwisting certain sections such as the hairline.

Every once in a while I like to re-twist my locks with Flax Seed Gel. Flax seeds contain a mega 3, jelly like substance that gets separated from the seeds with boiled in hot water. This jelly is full of omega 3 protein, and nourishment that are great for locks and loose naturals

INGREDIENTS
•6 large scoops of mayonnaise
•2 eggs
•green tea
•nettle extract (optional)

HAIR BENEFITS

MAYO- Mayonnaise contains oils which help nourish and moisturize your hair from deep within. It is considered very useful for dry and damaged hair. It also helps to stop breakage, restores PH balance and strengthens hair follicles.

EGGS- Eggs are rich in protein. Protein helps to make the hair follicle stronger and stronger strands of hair are less likely to break. Therefore, you’ll have fewer split ends. In addition to enhancing resistance to breakage, applying raw eggs to hair also makes it smooth. Smooth hair is easier to brush or comb and less likely to become tangled or knotted. Hair is also made thicker from the protein in raw eggs. This is especially beneficial if you have limp, lifeless hair or if your hair is thinning. Eggs act like a conditioner and moisturize dry hair. Eggs also make dull hair shine because unlike shampoo, eggs maintain the hair’s natural oils, which shampoo strips away.

GREEN TEA-Green Tea promotes growth of hair follicles and stimulates the dermal papilla cells to boost hair production.

NETTLE EXTRACT- Nettle is believed to improve the condition of hair and to prevent hair loss.

HONEY- Honey is an emollient which means it is a natural softener. This makes it a great hair conditioner that smoothens your hair. It is a natural antioxidant, so it tends to make your scalp healthy and stimulate hair growth. As honey is an emollient, it also improves the health of the hair follicles which are responsible for hair growth.

INSTRUCTIONS
1.Put all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix well
2.Apply to loose strands and/or locs from roots to ends
3.Don't be shy, the more the better
4.Massage scalp with conditioner in hair
5.Cover with plastic cap
6.Leave in for 45 minutes
7.Wash with cold water ( shocks cuticles closed to reflect shine)
8.Apply mixture of oil and water or Aloe-Vera juice
9.Style as usual

I boiled about 1 1/2 cups of flax seeds this time. It took about 15 minutes. The longer you boil, the thicker the finished product. Take a small grained strainer, mesh strainer or mesh cloth to separate seeds from gel. For extra shine, you can add your favorite oils or even lavender for a great smell.

Let it cool and style hair as usual. Great for reetwists, 2 strand twists, and starter locks. I really like this locking gel because it dries really fast and leaves hair tight and shiny.

If you're anything like me, you can get bored with your hair easily and if i'm bored then I'll usually just cut my hair off but I'm trying to let my locs flourish so this is something I use to pass some time. I believe everything is in the video but if you have questions feel free to comment them and/or if you live in Richmond, Va or even the DMV area and want your hair done I'm open to potentially do them for you. Just hit me up!

Since 2009, yarn twists have been my favorite protective style. In this video, I answer the following questions:

What type of yarn do you use? Where do you buy it?
Does yarn make your hair dry?
How long do you keep the yarn in your hair?
Which is better — yarn braids or twists?
What products do you use while wearing yarn twists?
How often do you wash your hair?
How do you wash your hair?
Does your hair get frizzy?
Do you retwist your hair?
What do you like the most about wearing yarn?
What do you like the least about wearing yarn?

Please understand these are my opinions and are based on my personal experience. All heads of hair are different.

Other questions I thought about (or was asked) after making the video:

Why is yarn better than using synthetic hair? (my opinion only)
(1) It is inexpensive, and one package is enough for my entire head. (2) A little frizz enhances the "naturalness" of the look. (3) They resemble locs. (4) My hair stays soft. (5) Yarn is light and doesn't weight down my hair.

Does yarn damage your hair?
No, yarn doesn't damage your hair if you keep vigilant about the build-up that will occur at the base of some braids or twists. I have had some breakage due to poor detangling sessions after removing the yarn. See my videos for more information:

Yarn Twist Extensions and My One Major Complaint!

Avoiding Yarn Twist Build-Up

How many pieces of yarn do you use for each twist?
If I'm doing small yarn twists, I use three strands of yarn for each twist and only two strands on my edges. If I am doing chucky yarn twists (larger sections for each twist), I use four strands of yarn for each twist and three strands on my edges.

How do you finish your ends?
I use to knot the end of the twist, cut the excess yarn below the knot, burn the knot and roll and seal. Then I started holding the end of the twist and burning it above my fingertips. I would roll, seal and cut off the excess yarn. It was supposed to seal the ends and give the twist a candlewick effect. That didn't work too well for me, and I went back to making a knot and burning.

See how seal my ends with the knot and burn (smaller yarn twists):
