What you should know before transitioning to natural hair

Here's an easy way to detangle matted, transitioning hair. I have been transitioning to natural hair since April 2013. Experiencing some breakage while transitioning is inevitable but using the right technique will reduce the severity of it.

This method works great for me and I haven't found anything that works quite as well. I like to use a conditioner with ALOT of slip, as this will aid in the detangling process. I don't worry too much about silicones while detangling. I mostly leave the silicone-free products for moisture, such as deep conditioning.

This took me about 30-40 minutes to complete.

My Natural Hair Journey | What happened to my curls? It’s story time beautiful people! I’m taking you all the way back to childhood Maya. I went through a “if I were a boy” phase, since my dad thought it was cute to keep my hair in a teeny weeny fro. My mom loved my curls and taught me to love them too. I did so many things wrong to my hair, from wearing my hair in bun 24/7 to decorating my head in ringlets. I embraced my hair fully in high school and was known for my big curls. I chopped it all off after pledging to be shameless. I experimented with colors. I had so much fun! Now ya girl is recovering from heat damage and on the journey to full healthy hair! Natural Hair Styles: Stretching Natural Hair By Roller Setting

When I need my hair to be stretched for a particular style (like flat twists, bantu knots, or dry twist outs), I don't always want to band it or use the blow dryer. This is when I turn to roller setting.

Since the objective is to get my hair straight (but not too straight), I can get away with using bigger rollers. I use leave-in conditioner as my "styler" since I'm not interested in having my curls be "set". The leave-in conditioner keeps my hair soft.

Roller setting natural hair is a great way to stretch natural hair, without using a blow dryer. Roller setting allows you to get your natural hair nice and smooth, making it a breeze to try out different natural hair styles. A key element in a natural hair care regimen is to ensure you don't use too much heat. Roller setting your natural hair allows you to avoid the damage of direct heat from blow dryers, while still getting your hair straight.
